Computer Science Month: A Computer is All Anyone Needs

A few years ago some dorks tried to make October Computer Science learning month, but now I can’t find any links to it. So I’m guessing it was discontinued due to excessive wedgies and wet-willies being inflicted on participants, which is a shame because computers are the single most coolest invention on the planet right now. Especially in light of today’s economic uncertainty (Two words of investment advice for day traders: Ramen Noodles), more than ever people need to understand how one computer can satisfy all their entertainment needs.

No one is want for anything if they own a computer with a broadband Internet connection. Drop the expensive phone line with all its taxes and hidden charges and embrace skype. It’s $2.95 a month to call landlines, but if everyone were using online phone services, nobody would be paying anything!

Do you still have Cable TV? WHY??? Everything show worth watching is broadcast online now, plus all the internet-only stuff that’s a million times better than the broadcasts. I watch my two favorite shows Lost and Battlestar Gallactica online when it’s convenient for me.

Still buying books? Why spend the money when every single classic is available online? Want audio books? LibriVox has that covered. Wikipedia offers you 20 times the content of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

It boggles the mind to think that people still shell out hundreds of dollars for the average game console, and then proceed to throw good money after bad on games running $50 a pop, when there are endless virtual worlds like Second Life, competitive classic games on Yahoo Games, and just plain silly fun games like Orisinal available for free.

$500 for a computer powerful enough to run the internet plus $50 a month for a high-speed connection, and you are suddenly free to stop paying for phone service, cable TV, books, and video games. Owning a computer isn’t expensive, not owning a computer is.

Of course, owning a computer doesn’t prevent one from enjoying the largest MMORPG there is real life. So you can go outside and run around. That’s free too.
