I had a reality check when I saw the Iranian consulate in Paris it says the Islamic Republic of Iran, not Iran, so the nation by its own definition is a theocracy. If Ahmadinejad is to blame, it's simply for being a corrupt leader, religion and corruption do not always correlate (well, I don't have evidence for either!) but I wouldn't blame religion for Iran's problems. Clearly, a nation is completely able to be corrupt without a religious reason, see North Korea. I remember when Kim Jong-il shot 38 under par the first time he played golf!
