
Hyper-Rummy
April 4th, 2008Here’s a variation on an old favorite of a card game. Try playing Rummy, but in addition to pairs and straights, try throwing in other number sets.

1 - Ace
11 - Jack
12 - Queen
13 - King
Set of Natural Numbers: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13}
Set of Even Numbers: {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}
Set of Odd Numbers: {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13}
Set of Primes: {1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13}
Set of Fibbonnacci Numbers: {1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13}
Set of Exponents: {1, 2, 4, 8}
You could also add famous irrational numbers taken to the maxium number of decimal places allowed by the available cards:
Pi: {3.14159265358979323}
Phi: {1.6180339887498}
e: {2.718281828}
Everyone automatically plays the empty set. : )
































I’ll have to try that sometime! Did Darin ever tell you about the game we made up in Russian class with a chessboard and a deck of cards that we called Tarot Chess? We decided there was too much free will involved and that there needed to be a fatalisic component to chess. We graduated the same year Forrest Gump came out, what else can I say? I’ll email you the rules if you’re interested. Mr. K was suffering fits that day watching us play it.

Could you cheat and play the random set? Or the set of all real numbers?
I was thinking it would be sort of like scrabble, where there could be disputes over what constitutes a real word (although that game uses the dictionary as an authority), or a bit like the game Go, where the win is agreed upon by both players.
Is there a math/science spin I could put on your tarot/chess game? It sounds a bit like Nightmare Chess, which is chess with cards that change the rules of the game (ie “Turn the board 90-degrees clockwise” screwing over players who have their pawns lined up along the horizontal).
