New Style

March 5th, 2008

I’ve decided to switch to a more traditional look and feel. After many hours of reading the white text on black background, even I decided it was time to switch up. Hope this is okay.

  1. Errr….I preferred the black. Gave a nice DOS feeling.

  2. Yeah, I gotta agree with that. A bit less light in my face as I read never hurt. :)

  3. Ryan,

The white places too much contrast on the page. Combine that with purple links, blue blockquotes, and no morning coffee; you get a very difficult page to read.

  4. I just woke up, and of course if this was the first page I would have went to, it would have hurt, but since it is near the bottom of the list, I guess it is okay (and it scared me for being different)

  5. Just ‘cuz it made a moot environmental impact doesn’t mean it’s not cooool. I also miss the white-on-black. It made the words look like constellations in space, with asteroids of apostrophes and comets of semicolons.

  6. For the record. I liked the old style too (I like the DOS comparison); however, 99% of the internet is black text on white background, and I have received several comments from people who told me they simply could not read the white text on black background for long posts. It’s nice for a website with really short posts like Laughing Squid, but I can’t seem to keep my posts to under 1,000 words, no matter how much I scrap them.

I’m still stuck on the purple though, but I’ll try and find a darker shade for more legibility. : )

Besides Clint, SourSwinger, and FlyingSirkus, your blogs are all black text on white background too!!! Thpppt!!!

  7. LOL. Mines white, because I failed to find a cool white on black theme and I’m too lazy to make one myself.

  8. Purple is my favorite color, and I am very fond of black too. I can change my blog to be black on white if I so choose…. It’s just too much work. :)

I think the main issue I’m having is the side bars are still blackish, and so the white REALLY stands out.

  9. Ryan,

Check out http://graybit.com/main.php. That site will gray out yours and show you the high contrast areas.

Carolyn said it much better than I did, about the dark background and the white main area. Since there is no blend between the two, it’s kind of like a quick punch in the face, when you open the page.

It works if that is the effect you’re shooting for. If that is the case, I’ll wear a hockey mask when reading your page. (man am I gonna look silly on my lunch breaks…)

  10. Yes, but mine is visually very minimalist. Yours deserves to look dramatic and different, since yours has a million times more interesting content.

And I agree with Carolyn, too. I love purple, maybe you could do white on purple? You know, in all your copious free time.

  11. Awww… Come on guys! I’m 34 years old, it’s time to do a blog that looks grown-up.

I do get your point BMF and Carolyn about the white streak down a black page. I’ll experiment this weekend after I get done painting my kitchen, writing the next week’s blog posts, uploading flickr photos, catching up on e-mail, and promoting the blog…

Waitaminute. What’s that smell? Oh yeah, I gotta fit a shower and laundry-time in there somewhere’s as well. : )

Seriously though, I’ll look for lighter sidebar colors.

  12. While you’re at it, I hear the marquee tag is making a comeback. ;)
