For everyone who likes a fight, here's some fun reading -- http://wizbangblog.com/content/2007/08/10/best-global-warming-story-ever.php

Oh, and for all those who are willing to change the world's behavior and economy based on current scientific trends, take a look at global cooling: http://www.denisdutton.com/cooling_world.htm

Let's face it: Science can only tell us what scientists predict based on what they have observed SO FAR. The current global warming research is science. The current attempt to change our world to match today's computer models is just political hype.

Chriggy,

There is a movement in the scientific community for "open-source science," but this is a new thing. Right now only PLOSOne is open-source. Want to see one of those articles the media is always talking about that appear in <i>Nature</i>? It will cost you. Most journals are so expensive, individuals can't subscribe to them, only University Libraries, and many of those libraries won't let you look at them unless you're enrolled at the University.

I would love to read Nature or the AAAS publications, but they're beyond my budget.

I'm going to disagree with all of you here.

@ideonexus: Why is most "peer reviewed" research not publicly available? It seems it should be, seeing as most researchers want their studies published.

@Riggy Christ: I see no conflict between the rules. Rule 5 refers to the entry itself, while rule 6 refers to the data used to create the entry. You can create a unique entry while still using publicly accessible data.

It appears to me that rules 5 and 6 are in blatant contradiction with each other, making the challenge impossible to win.

If that's how you want to interpret "publicly accessible," but to my experience what you are describing is "peer-reviewed research." Publicly accessible data is raw NASA measurements. Peer-reviewed research is mostly not publicly accessible. There's an important distinction.

Of course, you could be right. Who am I to question the integrity of a contest that makes you buy a shirt declaring how stupid you are for entering the contest in order to enter it? I'm sure this is completely legitimate.

I heard about this challenge and googled it, then I found this website. I had never gone to this man's website before but I decided to after reading your criticism. Well, you very poorly misunderstood the rules of the contest. Right below rule 5, rule 6 states that all data used must be publicly accessible. So you CAN use all those thousands of studies. By "original work" he means you cannot just copy and paste an entire paper by some scientist and claim it as your work.
