With melting ice caps opening new sea routes, the >US Coast Guard planning its first Arctic operating base. Also, Kansas Denies Plant Permit Because of Global Warming. Also, the Great Lakes Shrinking, costing shipping companies, which costs consumers. Also, the United States Responsible for One-Quarter of China’s CO2 Emissions. Woof! Maybe I should just start a weekly Global Warming Links thread.
Why do Dittoheads believe Rush Dimbulb’s vocal skepticism of Global Warming over the mountain of scientific evidence confronting them? Because people are more persuaded by gossip than facts. Scary.
James Watson, part of the team who discovered the structure of DNA, is receiving a well-deserved backlash for his statement that blacks are “less intelligent”. This statement, like many of Watson’s uninformed assumptions about genetic determinism, is just plain wrong. As the American Anthropological Association has stated, there is no such thing as race in regards to humanity. Angela Gunn has the best observations yet on Watson’s chronic foot-in-mouth disease: “Smart doesn’t mean polymath doesn’t mean wise, let alone omniscient.” Taking the advice of it’s title, I’ve dropped his book Avoid Boring People from my amazon wish list.
Humor that makes you think. We cannot tickle ourselves, because tickling requires another person. So how about a Robot Tickler?
From friendly machines to evil ones: Robot cannon kills 9, wounds 14 because of an apparent software glitch. I worked for taxpayer parasite SAIC years ago and got to see a proposal for robot tanks. “They’re awesome,” the proposal writer told me, “Except they kill good guys too.”
Two bits of conceptual synchronicity following my post on the silliness of English (and other cultural standards), it appears that Heavily Used Words Evolve More Slowly. Additionally, Harvard Scientists have produced a mathematical model to predict the future use of past tense, for instance how quickly “wed” becomes “wedded” (HT Clint).
Why are Buhdist Monks so happy? Because they work at it. Just as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy says we all should be doing.
Unlike Ira Flatow, Doris Lessing gets it, since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, her list of MySpace friends has jumped from 125 to 240.
More conclusive data will come in time, as the effects of Europe switching to cleaner fuels come to realization in a few years, but could Unleaded Gas Result in Lower Crime Rates?
Move over LOLCats, here comes LOLQuacks
